One of the most exciting things we do at Tribeca Dental Care in New York City is see the before and after effects of Invisalign clear braces.

Invisalign: How It Works

Invisalign aligners are custom made trays that are professionally crafted specifically for you. They are trays that you wear over your teeth, which are made from comfortable, smooth, BPA-free plastic. They are almost invisible. By putting gradual pressure on your teeth, the trays move your teeth into place until your final results are achieved. This takes approximately nine to 18 months.

What Types of Problems Can Invisalign Fix?

Choosing Invisalign aligners is a very effective way to straighten crooked teeth, overbites, underbites and other forms of malocclusion.

The first step is to choose the dental professional that will help you get that perfect smile using Invisalign treatment aligners. This is an important decision, involving:

  • Consultation
  • Fitting
  • Receive your aligners
  • Introduce a new set every two weeks

The Invisalign Consultation

Once you have chosen your dentist, you are ready for your  initial consult. The doctor will give you all of the details of what to expect during the Invisalign process. You can ask him/her questions you have about the cost, treatments – and talk about any other concerns you may have.

Fitting Your Aligners

A digital scan will be taken of your mouth and teeth to produce a 3-D image. Your treatment plan is determined by careful study of each of these images. Using the same technology that made your 3-D images, you will see virtual pictures of how your teeth will look as they move during each stage of treatment. These pictures will be sent to a lab, and your customized aligners will be crafted. Your dentist will also be able to give you a close estimate as to how long your treatment will take.

Receive Your Aligners

At this dental visit, you will receive your first aligners. Your doctor will show you how to put them on and take them off. They are made specifically for you and will fit tightly over your natural teeth.

Introduce a New Set of Aligners Every Two Weeks

Because of the gradual movement of your teeth, you will switch to a new set of aligners about every two weeks. Your Invisalign dentist will want to check your progress at approximately six week intervals. Each new set advances treatment and brings you closer to a great smile.

The more you wear your aligners, the faster your treatment will move forward. Ideally, you should remove your aligners only when you eat and brush your teeth, with a goal of wearing them 20 to 22 hours each day. Don’t worry about changing your diet, but be sure to brush after eating and before you replace the trays.
