Root Canal Aftercare | Tribeca Dental Care

Root canals play an important part in dental health, alleviating pain and temperature sensitivity issues. A root canal dentist can remove deep cavities and decay, as well as correcting cracked or severely damaged teeth. This restores a healthy, attractive, and functional smile. Proper root canal aftercare can help you minimize any discomfort. Follow these five tips:

Practical Tips for Root Canal Aftercare

Taking care of your tooth after a root canal is important for several reasons. First, it helps to prevent pain and swelling. Good dental hygiene can also keep the area clean and healthy. Here are several practical things you can do to help:

1. Eat Carefully

For a few hours after a root canal, it’s normal to feel the effects of lingering anesthesia. Part of your mouth may be numb, making it easy to accidentally bite your tongue. If possible, wait until the anesthesia wears off completely before eating.

2. Avoid Using the Affected Tooth To Chew

For many patients, there’s a period of several days between initial treatment and permanent crown. For example, in the case of an extensive tooth infection, the root canal dentist may prescribe antibiotics to completely eliminate bacteria. In the meantime, your tooth receives a temporary sealant and cap.

Avoid putting pressure on the tooth until it has a permanent crown. Don’t use it to chew food until your dentist gives you the green light. Of course, you can still eat normally with your other teeth.

3. Follow the Dentist’s Instructions

Each patient is unique, so the root canal dentist may provide specific instructions for your tooth. If you receive a prescription for antibiotics, make sure to take the entire course of medicine. This helps to prevent bacteria from getting into the treated area. Dentists want to help you stay as pain-free as possible, so always follow recommendations to the letter.

4. Brush and Floss Well

Brush your teeth normally after a root canal. This is good for the affected tooth because it removes food particles and keeps the area clean. Flossing helps get rid of food stuck between your teeth. If your gums feel sore, choose a gentle floss.

5. Complete Your Treatment

A root canal isn’t complete until the tooth has a permanent filling and crown attached. This provides strength and protects teeth from bacteria. Don’t skip any appointments with your root canal dentist. Your tooth needs them.

Normal Symptoms and Warning Signs for Root Canal Aftercare

It’s normal to experience minor discomfort, tenderness, or soreness around the tooth or in your jaw for a few days after a root canal. It’s often enough to take over-the-counter pain relievers for these symptoms; however, the dentist may give you a stronger pain medication if needed. It’s a good idea to keep an eye out for the following warning signs of allergies or infection:

  • Intense pain
  • Mild pain that lasts longer than a few days
  • Swelling
  • Rash or itching
  • Bite problems

Call the dentist if you experience these symptoms or if your temporary crown falls out. This can happen if you accidentally chew certain foods using the affected tooth. Restoring the crown is vital for preventing infections.
