The team at Tribeca Dental Care wants to remind all the parents that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. One of our most gratifying opportunities is helping our clients ensure they provide their children with great dental health and a lifetime of bright smiles.
The Importance of Proactive Protection
We want to use Dental Health Month to remind all of our patients that the prevention of dental problems takes just a little discipline and regular checkups. Specifically, you can help ensure good oral health for your kids by:
- Teaching your children the importance of brushing and flossing as soon as they grow their teeth. This includes helping your child brush at least twice a day.
- Ensuring your drinking water provides the recommended level of fluoride and, if not, consulting with your dentist about possible fluoride treatments.
- Providing healthy snacks such as vegetables and fruits while avoiding sugary drinks and foods. Also ensure your children learn to rinse their mouths after eating and drinking.
- Scheduling a visit with the dentist when you child’s first tooth appears or no later than the first birthday.
Identifying the Enemy
The American Dental Association and the ADA Foundation is a lead sponsor of Dental health month and has created materials for this year that focus on the problem of sugar in children’s diets. With a theme of “Sugar Wars,” the campaign creates a family that travels in the USS Sweet-Swatter and learns how to avoid the sugars that can be so damaging to oral health.
If you are a teacher or want to reinforce the idea of good dental hygiene with your children or youth group, we recommend you visit the ADA site and download a copy of the different posters that are available in different sizes.
