What Are Gap Teeth?

If you look at your smile in the mirror, or someone else’s smile, and notice extra space between two or more teeth, you are looking at gap teeth. Also known as diastema, or a spacing issue, gap teeth are most commonly found between the two front teeth. Depending on the person and the smile, there might be gaps in other spots as well.

How Are They Formed?

In most situations, diastema is the result of a jaw bone that’s simply too big for the size of the teeth. This gives the teeth space to spread out. A missing tooth could also create a gap, as could thumb sucking and other similar habits. Children may have temporary gaps as their teeth are growing in and as their baby teeth fall out to make room for their permanent teeth.

What Problems May Occur?

Individuals with gaps between their teeth can experience irritations from having food more easily get stuck in the space. This could also lead to cavities if the individual isn’t keen on oral hygiene. The gums of people with spacing issues are often sore, and some will experience gum disease.

Some patients don’t experience any irritations, tenderness, or gum disease. They may simply just not like the way a gap looks in their beautiful smile.

Can It Be Fixed?

The good news is diastema can be fixed. Invisalign for gaps is one of the most common orthodontic procedures. After a consultation with our doctor, we’ll customize a treatment plan. Aligners will then be made, which will be switched out at about two-week intervals. With the Invisalign system in place at all times, your teeth will slowly be coerced into moving into the right places.

You can do anything with the Invisalign clear aligners on your teeth, except eat, drink, brush, and floss. Otherwise, your life can go on like before.
