Understanding a Crossbite

What is it?

A crossbite is a rare type of malocclusion, or “bad bite,” seen far less often than the more common underbite or overbite. It presents as a lateral misalignment: Either the top back teeth bite down within the lower ones or the palate forces the upper front teeth behind the lower ones.

What causes it?

A crossbite is fairly common in children before their permanent teeth begin to erupt. However, it can also occur in the permanent teeth. Like other forms of malocclusion, it is usually a simple matter of the jaw being too small for the larger number of “adult” teeth.

Is there any way to prevent it?

A crossbite can be treated early in life, but cannot be prevented. Children should be monitored closely by a trusted family dentist who can discover signs of malocclusion. Luckily, adults can usually achieve complete relief from a crossbite with the appropriate orthodontic care.

Why is it important to get it corrected?

A crossbite leads to uneven application of force in the affected teeth whenever you bite down. As a result, it can cause significant wear to the misaligned teeth and to those nearby. Cracking, chipping, gum disease, and even bone loss are more likely with a crossbite.

Crossbite Treatment with Invisalign

What is treatment like for this type of bite?

Invisalign is a popular alternative to conventional braces that consists of a set of clear plastic trays. These discreet tools gently realign the teeth over time and can be removed as needed for eating, brushing teeth or other reasons.

Expected results

In many cases, a crossbite can be completely remedied by Invisalign. For adults, the typical course of treatment should be expected to run more than a year. Youths might see somewhat faster results. In any case, the realignment of teeth is permanent.

Aftercare

Patients should continue to maintain good dental health habits and see a dentist regularly.
