Deep Scaling

To remove the build-up of calculus (hardened plaque), especially at and just below the gum line, a very thorough job of scaling is done, using an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments as needed.

Root Planing

Being sticky, plaque is more likely to stick to rough surfaces than smooth, so planing root surfaces (with a dental instrument) to make them smooth makes it less likely that plaque can stick and harden into calculus.

Antibiotic Periodontal Treatment

Scaling and root planing remove a great deal of the bacteria responsible for gum disease, but some is still hiding deep in pockets or behind soft tissue. Antibiotic powder may be placed between gums and teeth to help kill this hidden bacteria. We use Arestin.

Laser Gingivectomy

Gingivectomy means the removal of gum tissue. Traditionally, this has been accomplished by periodontal surgery, with all that the term “surgery” implies. Heavy anesthetic, cutting of gums, and a long, painful healing process, when the gums attempt to regrow to replace the diseased tissue that was surgically removed.

Laser gingivectomy, on the other hand, is a relatively painless procedure using a laser. Only topical anesthetic is needed and healing is also fairly pain-free. The gum tissue easily re-attaches to the teeth to again protect the root surfaces from decay and seal the gums against the entry of bacteria.
