tribeca dental fall season super foods

Autumn is the perfect time to switch our wardrobe and our pantry items. These fall super foods support healthy teeth and gums!  Put away those sugary sweets and get ready to enjoy the best super foods of the fall season in New York City!

Aw, Nuts!

There’s nothing like the delicious aroma of roasted nuts to make you want to jump into a pile of freshly raked leaves. But did you know how nutritious a handful of those toasted treats is for you? Nuts are loaded with good fats, which make them a fantastic and healthy snack to tide you through the afternoon. Almonds are packed with calcium to build strong teeth and some studies show cashews are better than mouthwash in fighting off oral pathogens.

Turmeric, the Wonder Spice

Turmeric is a hugely beneficial spice that can be used to flavor warming soups and give a kick to roasted veggie bowls, but did you know that bright yellow powder also helps to whiten teeth and reduce gum inflammation? Combining a pinch with coconut oil on your toothbrush will give you pearly whites without the use of chemicals!

Green Tea for the Win

A cup of tea is like a warm hug after a day of walking in the autumn air. Known for its many health benefits like improved brain function and fat burning/boosting metabolic properties it also lowers the risk of certain cancers, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But did you know that one of the antioxidants found in green tea, catechins, is helpful in fighting bacteria that can cause plaque, cavities, gum disease and bad breath?

Leafy Greens to the Rescue

Dark, leafy greens are in abundance at the farmers market this time of year. Cooked in soups, eggs, salads, and even added to pizza, Swiss chard, kale, spinach and broccoli rabe are all rich in iron, folic acid and calcium that helps to build strong teeth and enamel.

Apples, Apples, Everywhere

Visiting an upstate orchard and picking apples is a wonderful way to enjoy the fall weather. Did you know that simply taking a bite and chewing a fresh and fibrous apple promotes heathy teeth and gums? The act of chewing helps to stimulate gums and reduces the acidity and bacteria that cause tooth decay and ultimately cavities.
