Invisalign

If you’re considering Invisalign to straighten your teeth, then you likely have many questions. At Tribeca Dental Care, it’s important to us that you feel comfortable and confident with the procedure before you get started.

Here are the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about Invisalign.

How long will I have to wear Invisalign?

Generally speaking, our patients wear Invisalign for a shorter period of time than they’d wear traditional metal braces. The average is about nine to 15 months, but it all depends on the needs of each individual patient. We sometimes see cases that only need six months while others need up to 18 months. When you visit us for your consultation, we can assess your needs and provide a specific estimate for you.

What are the food restrictions?

The great thing about the Invisalign aligners used for teeth-straightening is that you can simply take them out before you eat. This allows you to eat literally anything you want – including gum. You just need to be sure to brush your teeth and your aligners before putting them back in.

How many hours a day do I have to wear Invisalign?

The goal is to wear the trays 22 hours per day. That leaves you time to remove them when you’re eating and drinking, and to continue regular brushing and flossing.

Will I talk strangely when wearing the aligners?

We see some patients who feel they speak strangely the first day or two but generally speaking, you’ll be able to speak clearly once you get used to them.

Does this procedure hurt?

When you visit an Invisalign dentist, we’ll create a series of aligners. You’ll graduate to a new one every so often. This does put a slight amount of pressure on your teeth, which is necessary to move your teeth into straighter positions. While it may be slightly uncomfortable, the tension only lasts a few hours until your mouth becomes accustomed to the alignment tray.

How are the aligners cleaned?

You can just use your regular toothbrush and the toothpaste you’re already using. Every time you brush your teeth, you should be brushing your aligners as well. It’s very simple to take care of them.

How often do I have to visit my dentist?

We recommend you visit our offices once every two months or so. We’ll set you up with a series of appointments that work for you. This helps us ensure that your treatment is going as smoothly as possible.

Are retainers a part of the process

When your treatment is complete, you will still need to wear your retainers – but only when you sleep. This keeps your teeth aligned and prevents them from slipping back into their previous positions.

Can teenagers use Invisalign?

Of course! In fact, there’s a special line made specifically for teens. Ask us about color-coded strips that can tell parents at a glance if the aligners are being worn as much as they should be!
