Dental hygiene for braces

Invisalign and Braces

Braces are an important part of achieving healthy alignment of the teeth for people of all ages. No matter if you have traditional braces or Invisalign, it’s important to keep them clean. Both types of devices work and support dental health best when they’re maintained properly.

Remember, Invisalign aligners are removable at any time you want. You should aim to keep them in position about 20 to 22 hours each day, but this leaves plenty of time for cleaning. Special Invisalign cleaning kits are available, but not required – you can easily keep your aligners clean by simply taking them out and brushing them as you brush your teeth!

Keep Up Brushing and Flossing

The most important thing to remember for both braces and Invisalign is to keep brushing! You should brush as normal with conventional braces. With Invisalign, remove them before brushing your teeth and brush the trays separately using lukewarm water.

Consider a Water Flosser

Many people find flossing difficult, and it can be even tougher with braces. You might find that food gets stuck in metallic braces and is hard to get out. A water flosser can help, especially if it has a tapered orthodontic tip designed for removing food particles!

Add Mouthwash to Your Routine

Many types of traditional braces may increase your risk of white spots on the teeth caused by decalcification. To fend these off, add a fluoridated mouthwash to your daily dental care routine. This helps protect your teeth and maintain the minerals they need for strength.

Get Friendly With Proxabrushes!

Most people only use toothpicks on special occasions after certain meals – and you should never use them at the dinner table, that’s just bad manners! But there are actually many types of toothpicks designed for cleaning around braces and in between teeth, such as proxabrushes. Their soft bristles are especially useful for cleaning teeth and braces.
